COVID-19 and cytokines: weathering the perfect storm

Abstract

This week, looting, arson and violent deaths in South Africa were likened to a perfect storm, created by a  commanding and exquisitely timed collision of high- and low-pressure systems of power struggles, divisive narratives, poverty, (youth) unemployment, and a COVID-19 hurricane. We were left feeling vulnerable, disenchanted and questioning how to survive the deluge, heal from the destruction and address the critical issues that led to what the government called “an insurrection.” We live in turbulent times.
